How Orencia assistance works

Commercial insurance: The ORENCIA On Call Co-pay Assistance Program is Bristol Myers Squibb's commercial copay card. Eligible patients pay $5 per one-month supply, up to $15,000 a year. An Orencia claim carries two lines, the drug (J0129, billed by weight band) and the 96365 infusion administration; the card applies to the drug line only and does not cover infusion administration or office visit fees. Federally funded commercial plans are not eligible. View current program ↑

Uninsured: The BMS Patient Assistance Foundation ships Orencia free to qualifying uninsured patients who demonstrate financial hardship. Only the drug ships free; the patient's bill still carries the infusion charge.

The copay card cannot be used with Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE or VA coverage: the ORENCIA On Call Co-pay Assistance Program excludes government insurance outright, per the federal Anti-Kickback Statute guidance from HHS OIG. The BMS Patient Assistance Foundation can help some Medicare patients who meet its hardship rules.

Medicare: What is available instead is Medigap, which caps the Part B coinsurance. At the 750 mg dose, Medicare allows $3,512.41 and the patient's 20% coinsurance is $702.48; Medigap Plan K reduces that to $351.24 with the deductible met or $605.94 if not, and Plan L to $175.62 or $444.47. See Medigap out-of-pocket by plan →

Diagnosis-specific funds: The two Bristol Myers Squibb programs are not diagnosis-gated: eligibility runs on insurance status alone, so both apply the same way whether the record is rheumatoid arthritis (M06.9), psoriatic arthritis (L40.50), polyarticular JIA (M08.00) or acute GvHD prophylaxis (D89.810). Three foundation funds are diagnosis-specific and currently closed; four more on the list do not apply to any Orencia indication at all. See the funds question below for which is which.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Orencia copay card?

Yes. The ORENCIA On Call Co-pay Assistance Program is Bristol Myers Squibb's commercial copay card: eligible patients pay $5 per one-month supply, up to $15,000 a year. It covers the drug only and excludes Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, VA and other government insurance. Apply at orencia.com ↗ Calculate cost with the program →

Does the ORENCIA On Call program cover the infusion fee?

No. The card applies to the drug line only: J0129, billed at 50, 75 or 100 units depending on the patient's weight band. The 96365 infusion charge is billed separately, and neither Bristol Myers Squibb program pays it. View current program ↑

Can Medicare patients get Orencia through a Bristol Myers Squibb program?

Not the copay card: the ORENCIA On Call Co-pay Assistance Program excludes Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, VA and other government insurance outright. The BMS Patient Assistance Foundation can help some Medicare patients who show a hardship (at least 3% of household income spent on prescriptions, with proof of a Medicaid or low-income subsidy denial). Another route to lower cost is Medigap, which caps the coinsurance at $351.24 on Plan K or $175.62 on Plan L. See Medigap out-of-pocket by plan →

How do I apply for the BMS Patient Assistance Foundation?

Call 800-736-0003 or apply at bmspaf.org. The BMS Patient Assistance Foundation ships Orencia free to qualifying uninsured patients who demonstrate financial hardship; the infusion line still goes on the patient's bill. Apply at bmspaf.org ↗

Are there foundation funds for Orencia?

Three are keyed to an Orencia indication: HealthWell's AutoImmune Medicare Access fund ($2,800 a year), TotalAssist's Rheumatoid Arthritis fund ($4,000 a year) and TotalAssist's Psoriatic Arthritis fund ($3,500 a year); check each fund's current status on the funds list. Three more on the list do not apply to any Orencia indication: HealthWell's ANCA-associated vasculitis and giant cell arteritis funds, and TotalAssist's ankylosing spondylitis fund. Check today's status ↑

What if the plan denies Orencia?

28 of 29 payers in our corpus require a trial of methotrexate or another conventional synthetic DMARD before abatacept, so a denial usually cites the missing trial rather than the diagnosis. The BMS Patient Assistance Foundation is for uninsured patients demonstrating financial hardship, not for resolving denials. The ORENCIA On Call Co-pay Assistance Program applies only to an approved, paid claim; a denial must go through the payer's appeal or reconsideration process first. Check this patient's payer →

Orencia shares its class with Remicade (J1745, Janssen), Actemra (IV) (J3262, Genentech), Simponi Aria (J1602, Janssen), billed under their own codes with their own manufacturer programs. The programs above apply to Orencia only. If the payer requires Remicade, Actemra or Simponi Aria instead of Orencia, use that maker’s program below.

Each Remicade, Actemra or Simponi Aria card shows the date we last checked that program. Copay cards also say whether they pay the infusion or injection fee.
